People have wanted to make artificial eyes for as long as mankind has existed. This wish has been present in all great cultures of the past.

For centuries, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans invested a great deal of imagination and creativity in getting closer to their ideal of mirror of the soul through artistic reproductions; ancient Chinese also made artificial eyes of precious stones, semiprecious stones, ivory, white feldspar, metal alloy, porcelain and glass for mummies, statues, statuettes, masks, decorative dolls and animal toys.
