The artificial eye

An accident, an illness, or a congenital malformation can make it necessary to wear an eye prosthesis.
Such prosthesises do not only have cosmetic and psychological functions, but they also avoid shrinkage and protect the eye socket from eventual infections. On children they also favour a symmetrical development of the face. The glass eye prosthesises manufactured at my institute look natural, are very comfortable to wear (smooth surface) and ensure appropriate hygiene due to their tissue neutrality. Allergic reactions are unknown. As a faithful reproduction of the natural eye and individually adapted to the patient’s eye socket, they are discrete and restore our patients’ self-confidence.

Of course, all the artificial eyes we manufacture fulfil all legal requirements. Eye prosthesises are indicated in the following cases:

  • Loss of the natural eye due to a disease, an accident or as consequence of war wounds
  • Congenital anophtalmus (missing eye)
  • Congenital microphtalmus (the eye is too small)
  • So-called “blind eye” (injured, often shrunk, functionless eye)
  • Medical reasons: Protection of the eye socket or of the remaining eyeball, prevention of shrinking processes and encouragement of the skull growth and the face symmetry on infants.
