Glass offers numerous advantages that make it the most appropriate material for eye prosthesises: it is neutral, free of harmful substances and fire-polished, which provides it with a very thick and smooth surface. Similar to the healthy eye, the glass prosthesis is optimally wet with lacrimal fluid, it doesn't dry and it has a natural shine. The patient can also blink without difficulty. Further advantages: good biological compatibility, no allergic reactions, one single visit to the doctor (the patient receives his prosthesis immediately).
Although plastic eyes are unbreakable, they have a series of disadvantages. 1. The manufacturing process is longer, the patient needs to visit the ocularist at least 2 or 3 times. 2. The material is softer; the surface is easily damaged, which leads to a rough surface after a short period of wearing the prosthesis. 3. Allergic reactions may appear.
